Shea Butter Market

Foodstuffs is happy to bring you shea butter from Shea Butter Market, a company operated by Gifty Serbeh-Dunn. Gifty, who came to Canada from Northern Ghana in 1980, is committed to giving back to the people of Ghana. Shea Butter Market pays a premium price to shea farmers in Ghana and donates 2% of sales to the Tapko Widow’s Group.

Tapko is a village in Northern Ghana. Through money from Shea Butter Market, widows in this village have been able to send their children to school and pay for school supplies, uniforms and school fees. They can go to a medical clinic, and they can afford to buy meat and vegetables from a local market when their own crops fail.

Shea Butter Market has funded several other important projects in Northern Ghana. Gifty has started a micro-credit fund so women can borrow money for other ventures. She’s also a partner for tree planting projects and an organic farming project.

Choosing a Sunscreen

The active ingredients in sunscreen fall into two categories: physical filters and chemical filters. Some sunscreens consist of both physical and chemical filters, while others use just one type of filter.

Physical filters include the old classics, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. They work by literally forming a physical barrier that reflects light away from your skin. Physical filters are very gentle and kind to sensitive skin, but tend to be a little heavier. While physical sunblocks are sun-stable (meaning they don’t degrade when exposed to the sun’s rays), it’s still a good idea to re-apply; swimming and sweating can make the sunscreen wear off your skin.

Chemical filters absorb and diffuse sunlight. Wait 15 minutes after applying to give the filter time to protect your skin. Chemical filters aren’t as gentle as physical filters, but they’re quite a bit lighter on the skin and less likely to clog your pores. Unlike physical filters, most chemical filters are not sun-stable and must be reapplied throughout the day. However, chemical filters can protect your skin from a wider variety of light wavelengths than their physical counterparts.

Essential Oils and Aromatherapy – Getting Started

Beginner Basics:

  • Essential oils are made from the leaves, roots, flowers, seeds and other parts of plants
  • It generally takes 50 pounds of plant material to make one pound of essential oil
  • Essential oils contain no fatty acids, so they don’t go rancid like cooking oils
  • Preserve their quality by protecting them from heat, light and air – in dark bottles, tightly sealed

Safety Tips:

  • Keep essential oils away from children
  • Never ingest essential oils
  • Always dilute essential oils in a carrier oil – 1 to 3 drops per teaspoon (almond, jojoba, grapeseed are a few) before using them directly on your skin
  • Keep essential oils away from your eyes and mucous membranes
  • Some oils can be very irritating to your skin – all should be spot-tested before using in a bath, massage oil, lotion or perfume
  • During pregnancy or in the presence of any medical condition certain oils should not be used – ask one of our knowledgeable employees for a brochure and consult an aromatherapy or naturopathic practitioner before using

Using Essential Oils:

  • Essential oils can be added to lotions, shampoos and conditioners, massage oils, and the bath.
  • Use essential oils in aromatherapy diffusers, in candles, on pillows or cotton handkerchiefs
  • Create your own perfumes by blending essential oils – one drop at a time. Dilute 10 drops of the crafted scent-oil in 1 ounce of high-proof vodka

Some Favourite Oils:

  • Chamomile soothing and calming
  • Citrus scents energizing and mood-elevating
  • Eucalyptus purifying and cooling – helpful for chest coughs and colds
  • Lavender touted as the number #1 calming oil
  • Ylang ylang euphoric and sensual – an exotic light floral
  • Tea Tree cleansing, purifying, mood-elevating – antiseptic properties make it an essential first-aid oil
