Smudging

Make a fresh start with smudging, an Aboriginal North American tradition that comes from the Ojibway and Cree cultures. You can smudge people, dwellings, places of business, or even objects. Smudging can be used to cleanse a space or a person of negative energies, or to offer thanks and prayer. Smudge sticks are made with sage, sweetgrass, and other herbs. The end of the stick is lit, then the flame is extinguished to allow the smudge to slowly release smoke. A bowl or shell of sand is at the ready to extinguish the stick and to catch ashes. The smoke is then guided and fanned around the room, person or object.

Always ensure that the stick is fully extinguished at the end of the ceremony!

Shoyeido Japanese Incense

For 300 years, Shoyeido has been producing traditional Japanese incense. Shoyeido is dedicated to using only pure ingredients of the highest quality, and the final product is evidence of this dedication. Made without an inner core of wood, the incense burns much more cleanly than other varieties. Many people who cannot burn incense often have no troubles with Shoyeido, as its purity means fewer headaches.

Incense creation is an art form. Shoyeido’s master blenders approach the process with exceptionally high levels of skill. Herbs, spices, blending material and water are blended, shaped and dried. While the incense must be shaped quickly, the drying process is very slow.

Shoyeido ensures their ingredients—which include various roots, barks, plants, spices & resins—are natural, safe and ecologically kind.

We carry a wide range of Shoyeido, but it can be hard to choose! If you are not sure which incense is right for you, come into the store and check out our Shoyeido sampler packs.
